We’re doing the dumbest shit imaginable ad infinitum.
In February, a discussion called Beyond the War Paradigmbegan by noting how the US hasn’t really reexamined its national security stance since 9/11. The report’s authors at The Costs of War Project presented a framework outlining how we could be far safer for far less money.
Big Media didn’t cover it (or any number of diplomacy-first voices), because they take ad money from the big defense contractors. So instead of a national conversation about what would make us safest, we’ve been getting the same manufacturing of consent Noam Chomsky warned of in 1988.
Consent for $40 billion in aid to Ukraine. Consent for NATO expansion — even super-neutral Switzerland is considering joining. Consent for a renewed proxy war with Russia that I guess should be called Cold War II. Nuclear war is now such a legitimate renewed possibility that Sting felt compelled to inflict play “Russians” on for us all again. No one voted for that.
