This episode of The Verge’s Decoder podcast contains an excellent analysis of current unionization efforts. Key point: Workers at Starbucks work in close proximity and get to talk with each other a lot, making organizing easier. Amazon workers are comparatively siloed. Apple’s are somewhere in between.
I found the bit about why Alphabet formed a solidarity union (which cannot bargain for contracts or call for strikes) fascinating. Forming one organization with both full-timers and contract workers instead of two seems to have been a fatal flaw.
